Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is an advanced therapeutic approach. This hands-on approach is used in working with people who have central nervous system insults that create difficulties in controlling movement. Therapists using NDT techniques have completed advanced training in NDT, are certified and work closely with individuals with neurological challenges (e.g. cerebral palsy, stroke, head injury), helping them to become as independent as possible.

The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that process the sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements. A therapist trained in vestibular problems can teach the body how to better process movement without the dizziness that can accompany the movement.

Massage is the manipulating of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using various techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being. The myofascial release approach is a form of soft tissue therapy. Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body, including muscle. This soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow. Scars form deep adhesions in underlying tissue that impede blood flow and mobility.

Orthopedics is a branch of medicine focused on the muscular and skeletal systems. There are various types of disorders and injuries affecting our muscles, bones, and joints. A physical therapist would relieve pain and restore movement, strength and function.

“Our son was only 3 months old when we were referred to Theresa for the treatment of Torticollis. Being new parents, we were scared and nervous! On our first visit, my husband was reluctant to let go of our son, but after he did, we immediately knew why the pediatrician referred us to Theresa. She thoroughly explained Torticollis to us and detailed every step of what she would be doing for our son. While examining him, her ability to keep our son relaxed was amazing. Because he was relaxed, we nervous parents began to relax too! He never realized his neck muscles were being stretched because her methods kept him focused on toy or other distraction. Theresa showed us exercises to do at home and they were easy to follow and incorporate into our daily lives. He is now an extremely healthy, happy and active little boy, thanks to her! We are truly grateful for her kindness, patience, and most importantly, her expertise in Pediatric Physical Therapy! We can never thank Theresa enough!

Theresa Dourado is a fabulous therapist.  She has worked with my autistic daughter and helped me to help her.  She taught my daughter and I about how the body works and how we can overcome obsticles to help our bodies work without difficulty and without pain.  I highly recommend her and cannot sing her praises enough.
